We’ve all been there–handing our kids the iPhone or iPad while we try to get out a few last-minute emails in or finish an assignment–and then feeling guilty about it. It definitely comes with the territory of being a work-at-home mom.
And while I think some screen time is ok, I’m always looking for toys that hold their interest a little bit longer. So here is a list of my favorite toys for 2022. They are perfect for Christmas, birthdays, or whenever!

1-Creativity for Kids Build and Grow Tree House Craft KitHow cute is this little tree house? Sure, I bet it makes a big mess, but it’s a craft, plant, and toy all in one. I feel like I’d be inspired to help my kids keep these plants alive. Creativity for Kids has a bunch of amazing toys for kids of all ages. Check it out!
If real plants aren’t your thing, you’ll love this stacking flower garden toy. My daughters adore their sets, and there were a lot more pieces than I realized. It’s perfect for both toddlers and slightly older kids because the pieces are easy to manipulate, but you can do a lot of fun things with them.
3-Melissa & Doug Slice & Stack Wooden Sandwich Counter
Do I think Melissa & Doug toys are slightly overrated? Kind of. Are my kids obsessed? Yes. This deli counter is a bit pricy, but it really holds their interest. However, they also love this birthday cake, which is a lot more affordable.
4-Kinetic Sand, Amazon Exclusive Treasure Hunt Playset
So, if you are like me, the mixing of the different colors of kinetic sand makes you cringe hard. But with this treasure set, all the sand is already one color, so it’s less painful. Plus, it keeps my girls occupied for a WHILE. They love hiding treasure in the chests, so it’s a win and a steal at under $20.
5-120 Crayola Crayons in Specialty Colors
Even if your kids are a little bit older, this magical set of Crayola crayons is sure to delight them. These colors are bright and beautiful. I actually hide the glitter ones, and we only take them out when I’m watching. They are just too pretty to let them break them. (I know–defeats the purpose, but they really are fun!)
6-Melissa & Doug Puffy Sticker Activity Books Set
Stickers are a real hit in my house, and yes, they make a mess, but they also help your kids develop hand-eye coordination, they are cheap, and they keep them busy. So, you win some, you lose some.
7-Playskool Sit’ n Spin Classic Spinning Activity Toy
If you grew up in the ’90s, you already know. This toy kept you busy for hours, even when you were way too big. If you are a younger millennial and you missed out, it doesn’t mean your kids have to. Get yours here.
8-Paw Patrol True Metal Adventure City Movie Play Mat Set
Paw Patrol DOES have this weird hold over some kids (and me!–that’s how we got our pup Maple Skye Meatball). When you combine that with the fun of a carpet playmat, this is really a winner.
OSMO has so many different learning kits that you’re kids will never be bored. And while these kits do require some screen time, for the most part, they are also highly interactive. Be sure to check them out.
10-Crayola Inspiration Art Case Coloring Set
If you were a young girl in the 90s, you were probably obsessed with these. I know I was. But the best part of these art sets is that they are made by Crayola, which means they are a little less suspect and probably work better than the ones we had as kids.
This definitely falls in the category of things I wish that I had as a kid cause, ya know, Jurassic Park. The thing I love about trucks is that they just seem to keep the kids’ attention longer–boys and girls. Plus, you can’t go wrong with dinosaurs.
12-Marble Genius Marble Run Super Set
Last on the list is another toy I wish I had as a kid–this Marble Super Run Kit. This mega set has endless options when it comes to configuring the marble runs. It’s like Magnatiles, but honestly, way cooler. (I hate Magnatiles, but that’s my own thing.)
Bonus-The Montessori-Inspired Indoor Play Gym
If all else fails, there is always this indoor play gym for when the weather is terrible, and you need to get stuff done. It’s big, it’s obnoxious, and it’s expensive, but if your kids are super-hyper climbers like mine, it might be worth it.
